I.C.E - For Your Feral Cat Colony?
Hey Everyone,
For those of you who haven’t heard about the acronym I.C.E it stands for In Case of Emergency. This is for anyone who owns a pet but specifically for feral colony caregivers, you need to have an ICE plan in place for your pet or colony. This is especially important for the eastern states and Atlantic Canada with the approach of Irene.
Alley Cat Allies has some tips for any colony caregiver.
· Carry information about your colony on a card in your wallet at all times. This will inform emergency workers of what to do in the event of an emergency. Include any information on your back-up caregivers. A copy of this card should also go in your cars glove box and on your fridge or a prominent place in your home.
· Have an ICE plan in place. This can include whether or not you evacuate your colony given the time. If you evacuate your colony remember feral cats can become agitated and stressed in a cage environment so take precautions to make sure they don’t escape. If you chose not to or are unable to evacuate make sure that you have ICE feeding areas that are off the ground in case of flooding and sheltered from wind and rain.
· Have a back-up caregiver, someone who can care for the colony in your absence
· Keep a stocked emergency kit ready at all times
